Highlights of 2009-2010

Project Uerê Grant

In September, our request for a matching grant for our International Project Uerê was approved.  This grant of $14,500 provided food for approximately 420 children for nine months.  Partners in this grant included the Rotary Club of Linden, District 7570, two Rotary Clubs in Rio de Janeiro, District 4570, and the Rotary Foundation.

Golf Tournament

The 2nd Annual Linden Golf Tournament held on October 23 was a great success.  It was a beautiful day and everyone who participated enjoyed themselves tremendously.  Proceeds for the day totaled $7,418 with a net profit of $4,138.

Coat Drive

In December, Linden Rotarians donated over 400 coats and sweaters to C-CAP.  The coats were donated by our membership, friends, RMA students, and the community at large.

Rotarians Against Hunger

On Saturday, March 6, Rotarians from Area 1 packaged 37,000+ meals that were sent to the Ivory Coast of Africa.  There were approximately 120 people who participated in this event and 30 of these volunteers were associated with The Rotary Club of Linden.  Area 1 Rotarians raised $9,000 for this effort.  Of that amount, Linden Rotary contributed $2,135.  Skyline Interact club and RMA Middle School Students assisted in this service project.

95th Annual District 7570 Conference

The Rotary Club of Linden was represented at the 95th Annual District 7570 Conference at the Homestead in March by 13 members along with 4 spouses.  Another Linden Rotarian attended on Saturday.  The Rotary Club of Linden received a Gold Club Award, 2nd Place in Club Attendance, and a Certificate of Recognition for achieving 60% of our membership as sustainers.  Katie Tewell received a Vocational Service Award.

March for Babies

The Front Royal March for Babies in April was an outstanding success.  The lead team for this event was The Rotary Club of Linden with support from The Apple House in the form of coffee and donuts.  $30,573 was raised locally.

Linden Playground Ribbon Cutting

After years of fund-raising and months of work, the Linden Park Playground was accomplished and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on April 29.   Our club raised nearly $37,000 in support of this project for the Linden Community.  We are grateful to the County of Warren for their partnership and support.

Gala

Our 2010 Gala held on May 1 was, by any measure, an extraordinary success!  Led by Rhonda North and Jean Plauger, but with support from the entire club, the Gala exceeded all expectations bringing in $23,638.  Our net profit was $14,816.  Our primary beneficiary this year is the Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging’s Well Tran Program which is in need of a vehicle to transport their clients.  Our Club’s other service projects will also benefit from this event.

Yard Sale

We raised over $1,600 at this year’s yard sale, making it the best we’ve ever had.  We had a large number of interesting items to offer and we held the sale on May 15, the same day as the Chamber’s Wine and Craft Festival.  This was a stroke of unintentional genius that provided a stream of customers throughout the sale.

An International Affair of Wine & Food for Polio

On Saturday, May 22, Area One Rotarians gathered together for an elegant, yet fun evening in an effort to reach a $200 million fundraising goal to eradicate Polio worldwide.  Proceeds from the event were estimated to be $12,100.  The Rotary Club of Linden received $1,700 which was sent to the Rotary Foundation to meet our Polio Plus pledge this year.

Donations to Annual Fund

The Rotary Club of Linden was identified as one of 17 Clubs in District 7570 who have exceeded an average of $100 per member in contributions to the Rotary Foundation this year.

Skyline H.S. Scholarships

Two graduating seniors from Skyline High School received scholarships for $1,250 from the Rotary Club of Linden in June.  Chelsey Hackney and Emily Atkins were selected from a very competitive list of qualified students.  We had expected to present only one scholarship, but the success of our Happy Dollars Program allowed us to include a second.

Non-Profit Organization of the Year

The Rotary Club of Linden was honored as the 2010 Non-Profit Organization of the Year by the Front Royal-Warren County Chamber of Commerce.  The award was presented at the Chamber’s 65th annual dinner and Shining Star Awards program on June 11 at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club.

Presidential Citation

Most recently, The Rotary Club of Linden received the Presidential Citation for strengthening Rotary's future through exemplary action and service.   Our Club was one of 24 Clubs in District 7570 to be awarded the Citation from RI President John Kenny.    We can all be very proud to have achieved this recognition from President Kenny.
